Memphis the Musical is partly based on a true story of 1950s Memphis, TN. The show follows Huey, a white radio DJ, and Felicia, a black nightclub singer, as they bring traditionally “black” music to the rest of the world. With a little bit of romance and a lot of singing and dancing, the musical tells a triumphant story of breaking stereotypes.
The musical first appeared during the 2003-2004 season in both Beverly, MA, and Mountain View, CA. Memphis moved to Broadway October 19, 2009, and it won the Tony Award for Best Musical and three other Tonys during the 2010 ceremony. A national tour is planned to start in October 2011.
